T.RES Worldwide initiatives
Ferrino, working with Guide Alpine Star Mountain, a travel agency
specialising in treks and expeditions in Patagonia, is supporting young
aspiring Mountain Guides by offering them a "headquarters" at Camp
Madsen, in the village of El Chaltèn, at the foot of the Fitz Roy and
Cerro Torre mountains.
Given the strange weather conditions in the area, the Ferrino tent will
be used as a meeting place for these young people with a host of
wide-ranging resources when it comes to climbing but who are greatly
disadvantaged in economic terms.
There has been notable growth in tourism in the area over the last ten
years and supporting the young trainee mountain guides means giving a
great boost to education in local tourism, which at times progresses in
a manner that is little suited to the delicate equilibrium of the
environment.
The profession of Mountain Guide has existed in Argentina for some
years, but its cultural connotation is far different from that in
Europe and the required apprenticeship can be compared to that of the
alpine guides in the late 19th century. We hope that our support
will help these young people to turn their passion into a profession.
