ENSA (École Nationale de Sky et Alpinisme) was born in France in 1946. This public organization under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth and Sport has two main objectives:
- training mountain sport professionals
- the development of skiing and climbing instruction methods
The internationalization of mountain tourism and the evolution of sports as well as the evolution of climbing and other mountain sports has seen the role of ENSA grow and add new responsibilities to its original ones. More specifically:
- the training of instructors (ski instructors, high mountain guides) and safety professionals (third and second level slope maintenance technicians ) in connection with civil protection agencies
- the training of athletes and the perfecting of technical managers of the French Ski Federation, the French Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Federation, the Federation of the French Alpinists Clubs, and the French Free Flight Federation
- studies in collaboration with institutional partners in Alpine sports sector not only regarding technique, but also for safety as well as medical and educational research in relation to competitive sports
- the development of international relations within the framework of intergovernmental protocol to facilitate the exchange and promotion of know-how, experience, and teaching methods
