“PIOLET D’OR” CAREER AWARD FOR KRZYSZTOF WIELICKI

Piolet d’Or is a very coveted honour, it's like an Oscar for mountaineers. This award has been assigned in 2019 to the Polish mountaineer Krzysztof Wielicki which, besides being one of the first to complete all the 14 Eight-thousand, has been also the first to climb the Everest, Kangchenjunga and Lhotse in winter. Many people remember him for his challenges during the 80's, specially for his solitaries, firsts ascents and many adventures spent together with Polish compatriots who have made the history of high altitude mountaineering with him.

This award is not only for me but is for all the Polish mountaineer of my generation protagonist of the golden age of the Himalayan mountaineering. I've been even lucky since I've climbed for 50 years and I'm still alive, against all odds. I'm definitely very honoured to be part of the group of legendary mountaineer such as Diemberger, Messner, Bonatti, Bonongton, Roskelley and many more".

The Ladek Mountain Festival  was held in Poland from 19th to 22nd of September, where the world of mountaineering gathered together for the celebration of the Piolet D’Or. Wielicki, like other great mountaineers such as Bonatti and Messner, has been an inspiration for the successive generations and his exploits have guided generations of climbers from around the world.
Wielicki has been always very active: we followed him in the 2017/18 winter when he was the leader of the Polish expedition that attempted the first winter of the K2. This team was equipped with tents, sleeping bags and backpacks of the High Lab Ferrino collection.

“I used for the first time Ferrino tents during the winter of 1990/91, during our attempt of climbing the Makalu (8.486 m). In the last winter (2017/2018), for the attempt on K2 our team was equipped with Ferrino tents which proved to be excellent in terms of quality and lightness. For this reason we have choosen Ferrino tents both of the 4 seasons and the Ferrino High Lab high-altitude line for our next Himalayan winter program".

The collaboration it's renovated, Krzysztof and his team keep on using high-altitude tents of Ferrino High Lab collection. In that period that we can call as the “golden age of the mountaineering”, besides Messner also Wielicki and his team have used Ferrino products.

“I’m part of a project for the preparation of an expedition on K2 in 2020/2021. Meanwhile we are organizing 2 or 3 expeditions to find new young climbers to face this hard challenge.
We are planning to organize an expedition for this winter in Hunza region on the Karakorum group to climb some peaks over 7.000 meters, in order to train the young team to climb at high altitude in winter.
Next year we will send a group of mountaineer on the the Broad Peak and on the K2 to train them to the teamwork”.
